ATF rejecting Form 1s, and a couple of giveaways.

Multiple sources are reporting that the ATF has done a mass rejection of e-file Form 1 Silencer applications. My info comes from AR15.com, but this same information is being said by multiple sources including sites like Reddit and Recoil. Here is a rough explanation of what is going on.

Long story short, you can legally make your own silencer after submitting a $200 fee and filling out a “Form 1” tax document. Now, these “Form 1” documents can be submitted electronically.

I have a few registered Short Barreled Rifles (SBRs), one was purchased as a factory made SBR and transferred to me on a Form 4. The other 2 I made using Form 1.

The process can be daunting the first time you got to do it, but it is generally easy. Slow, but easy.

In the past few years, companies have been selling all sorts of kits that can be used to manufacture a silencer. Not that long ago, a company selling these kits named Diversified Machine Products got raided by the ATF. Our beloved government organization, the BAFTE, declared that the kits DMP was selling were already silencers, so selling them without paperwork was illegal.

Now, a whole bunch of people who submitted paperwork to legally make a silencer got rejected, with the ATF telling them that the parts they already have are illegal silencer, so they can’t legally make a silencer out of them.

Now the ATF is a pretty evil group, and people are expecting that they are doing this intentionally to try and ban or discourage silencer ownership for any number of evil and freedom hating reasons.

That is quite possible. But like the old saying goes, “never attribute malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”, it is possible that the ATF just wanted to prevent people from making kits with Diversified Machine parts and ended up accidently canceling too many applications. It might not be evil intent, but just incompetence on their IT department.

Or the ATF might be stupid and evil?
